In a Facebook post, Shakil Uzzaman said that the independent election campaign of the party candidates has practically become questionable due to the decision of People’s Rights Council President Nurul Haque Nur to reach a seat agreement with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and the call for party leaders and activists to vote on rice ears.
In his words, “If the party had participated in the election alone, the candidates would have had the opportunity to be in the field spontaneously.”
He stated that he has decided to withdraw from the election, considering it fundamentally inconsistent to continue with the election in this situation.
He also expressed his deep gratitude to all those who have been by his side for a long time—from the nomination process to the field-level campaign, who have given their labor, courage, and strength.
Shakil Uzzaman said in his post that he will stand by the people in their joys and sorrows, not as a candidate for parliament, but as a son, brother, and fellow soldier of the area. He sought everyone’s blessings to stay away from unethical practices and political malpractice in his future political career.
According to political analysts, the announcement has sparked fresh debate over the internal decisions of the People’s Rights Council and the agreement with the BNP, creating confusion and frustration, especially among grassroots leaders and activists.
Shakil Uzzaman confirmed this over the phone and said, “I am indeed withdrawing my candidacy. I am consciously making a post on my Facebook page to this effect.”
It is worth noting that the Tangail-02 (Gopalpur-Bhuiyanpur) constituency has long been known as a politically important area.
